Awareness and sensitization on Hygiene


Awareness and sensitization:


Sensitization and awareness were conducted in Gaya shuwari camp to raise awareness of the importance of Promoting good hygiene around the targeted community, the effect of open defecation, and the measure that will be taken to reduce and stop open defecation in the community was highlighted. Sessions on personal hygiene, environmental hygiene, and food hygiene were facilitated in different languages of Kanuri, shuwa Arab, and with questions, and answers to increase understanding and learning that will promote good hygiene practices in Gaya Shuwari camp. 142 Women were targeted for the activity and 82 attended the sensitization and awareness sessions. Low attendance was recorded due to the cause of rainfall that disrupted the timing from the beginning.


Distribution:


Soap and detergent were distributed to the participants and feedback from the community were noted. 82 women received 4pairs of soap and a big sachet of detergent to help them promote good hygiene in the community, the community leaders received 2pack of bottled water and soft drink as gifts from Kumbal Support Initiative.


GAPS AND CHALLENGES:

  • Female toilet is very close to Men toilets

  • Women tend to be shy from using the toilet because is too close to Men’s toilet

  • Rampant open defecation within the camp due to lack of functioning toilet on the other side of the camp

  • Lack of adequate HP facility

  • Lack of functioning toilet on the other side of the camp

  • To defecate, some of the HH dig holes and used for a week

FEEDBACK AND OBSERVATIONS:


  • Members of the community solicit more support in sustaining awareness and sensitization

  • The community members appreciated the support from Kumbal Support Initiative

  • Seek more support in shelter and food

  • Community member’s request for more support for hygiene promotion kit
